November 18, 2021 — United was the first airline in the world to operate a flight using 100% drop-in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The flight took off from Houston on a path over the Gulf of Mexico. One engine on the Boeing 737 MAX 8 used 100% SAF and the other had conventional jet fuel. The SAF used was a combination supplied by World Energy and Virent, and provides an estimated 75% reduction in lifecycle carbon emissions.
