Grants for Algal Strain and Cultivation Biology Improvements
The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) is offering up to $8 million in funding for the development of technologies, tools, and approaches to advance the production of algal-based biofuels. Funding is subject to appropriations. Eligible applicants will develop algal biology technologies that enhance the current state of algal biofuel production technology and increase productivity. Concept papers are due January 13, 2017. Applicants must submit full applications by February 22, 2017, for consideration. For more information and eligibility requirements, refer to the FOA.
Grants to Support Integrated Biorefinery Optimization
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) are offering $22.7 million in grant funding for projects that address the financial and technical challenges associated with robust scale-up of commercial biorefineries. Funding is available in four topic areas including robust handling of feedstocks, biosolids, residual solids, and feeding systems to reactors; high-value end products from waste or another undervalued source; industrial separations in an integrated biorefinery setting; and solid material (e.g., feedstock) modeling and reactor feeding systems.
Applicants must submit concept papers and full applications by February 6 and April 3, 2017, respectively. For more information on eligibility requirements and project topics, refer to the FOA.
Grants for Advanced Drop-In Biofuels Production Projects
The U.S. Air Force is offering funding through the Defense Production Act for Title III Advanced Drop-In Biofuels Production Projects. Funding will be awarded to projects that increase the production of domestic advanced biofuels through the development of Integrated Biofuel Production Enterprise (IBPE) capabilities. IBPE capabilities should represent the entire value chain for advanced biofuels. Eligible projects must: result in domestic advanced biofuels suitable for military use, a production capacity of at least 10 million gallons per year, be produced using acceptable feedstocks, and be compliant with the Energy Independence Security Act of 2007, Section 526 for greenhouse gases. Applications may be submitted for pilot- and commercial-scale production facilities.
Total funding under this announcement is $110 million, with a $55 million government share and a $55 million recipient share. It is expected that one award will be made. Applicants intending to apply for funding must submit an Intent to Propose by April 27, 2017, and a full application by May 25, 2017. For more information, refer to the USAF announcement.
